Responsible gambling
Gambling is entertainment that costs money — never a way to make it. This page collects the free UK tools and support that actually help.
If gambling is causing you harm right now, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. It is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, every day.
Ground rules that work
- Decide what you can afford to lose before you play, and treat that figure as the cost of the evening — not a target to win back.
- Set a deposit limit in your casino account on day one. Every UK-licensed operator must offer one.
- Don’t gamble when you’re upset, drunk, or trying to fix a money problem. That’s when losses compound.
- Keep gambling money separate from rent, bills and food money. If they’re mixing, stop.
- Take the time-outs. Breaks of 24 hours to six weeks are available on every licensed site, no questions asked.
Signs it’s becoming a problem
- Chasing losses, or betting more to feel the same buzz
- Hiding gambling from family or friends
- Borrowing to gamble, or missing bills because of it
- Feeling restless or irritable when not playing
- Gambling to escape stress, low mood or boredom
One of these on its own is a warning light. Two or more is a good reason to talk to someone — the helpline above is the easiest first step.

Blocks beyond the casinos
- Bank gambling blocks: most major UK banks (including Monzo, Starling, Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest and HSBC) can block gambling transactions on your card from within their app, often with a cooling-off period before it can be lifted.
- Blocking software: tools such as Gamban block gambling sites and apps across your devices. GamCare can provide free access in some circumstances.
- TalkBanStop: a partnership combining GamCare support, Gamban software and GAMSTOP self-exclusion in one route.
Under 18?
Gambling under 18 is illegal in the UK, and this website is not for you. If gambling is affecting you or someone your age, BigDeal (run by GamCare) offers free, confidential support specifically for young people.
